Smoking banned outdoors?

This one falls right in Shawn’s lap as Minnesota’s leader on smoking ban issues, so I won’t get into it too much other than to say that anybody who thinks that this has a thing to do with public health needs to be checked into a mental hospital, because secondhand smoke exposure at an outdoor county fair should be the least of the health worries of these nannying busybodies… Yet here they are, vowing to uphold a smoking ban at the fair.

Where are the bans on fried foods? And what about all those diesel generators sitting around every booth and ride? it’s well documented that diesel exhaust is far more toxic than secondhand smoke. Even if they’re gasoline, those gas fumes are much more toxic too…

This isn’t health, this is convenience. People don’t like the smell of smoke, and they want laws to keep it away from them.

Thanks to Marshall for bringing this chart to light. You can read up on this here.

And don’t forget to read the follow up article on vegetable oil hazards!

  1. That is probably one of the most retarded things I have ever heard. . .If they want to protect the health of the children they should start with the worst polluters first . . . like the buses, delivery trucks, diesel driven rides, etc etc etc. Here is a chart that puts it into perspective.

  2. Yes I agree Ryan, was it ever really about health. This dictator of a man is bad for everyones health. Soes he hear voices from God or something, or just think he is one.

Great site verita, found it through a link and some great discussions on Michael Siegel comments,

2008-06-25 21:36:33 – A clear majority wants smoking banned in all homes, even if children are not present, and even if the smoke is not drifting into an adjoining dwelling.

This could expand the latest front in the war to protect nonsmokers, says the man who started the nonsmokers’ movement by getting smoking first restricted and then banned on airplanes and then in workplaces and public places, and who is racking up victories in the battle to ban smoking in private.

Yeah right, like dictators like you are going to stop me smoking in MY home, evil little man.

  4. This is crazy. Did this fair have animals? Many fairs do, I know our County fair does, but animals can make you sick, too.

In December 2002, Pennsylvania passed a bill requiring petting zoos and other animal exhibitions to provide hand-washing facilities and to post information about the more than 75 diseases humans can contract from contact with animals.

Although many cases are due to contaminated food and water, transmission of E. coli from animals to people is a growing concern. Several recent outbreaks at petting zoos across the country have prompted the CDC to issue federal safety guidelines to animal attractions that allow human-animal contact.

Guess we better ban petting zoos and ALL ANIMALS, especially at fairs, too.

  5. We really should just advocate for a ban on anything that might possibly be harmful or have the potential for being harmful to somebody at some point. Maybe then people will get the message.

Of course, it won’t work because the message is very clear. They don’t like smoke. They don’t like smokers. Therefore, it’s easy to use the guise of public health to get rid of those nasty smokers and their disgusting tobacco…
