As far as countries that I think we should strive to emulate, I can’t say that the Philippines is high on the list. In fact, I’m not sure that it even makes the list. Nothing against the Philippines, mind you. I just wouldn’t advise emulating them.
Yet, if tobacco-control advocates get their way, we’ll be right behind the Philippines in exerting control over movies in the name of public health…
Ban on smoking scenes in movies sought
Anti-tobacco advocates are setting their sights on movie and television scenes showing actors and actresses smoking cigarettes, saying these should be banned.
Dr. Maricar Limpin, head of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control Alliance-Philippines (FCAP), said they are consulting with their lawyers on how to have such scenes prohibited in movies.
And there we have it. Tobacco control the Philippino way… Should we be next in line?

Although I find it strange that they don’t list the ACS there. Can it be that the ACS is actually not involved in this?
Even though Glantz claims it’d be counter-productive, I’ll bet you dimes to doughnuts that they’ll be taking Uncle Teddy (as in Turner, not Kennedy)’s magic movie altering machine (the one that made the classics “Oh, so colorful!” back in the 80’s, remember?) and taking the cigs out of people’s hands, and replacing the drinks with glasses of milk!
I predicted 10 years ago crap like this would come down the boards, and got laughed at. Now that I’m right, what do all the good little “Milgram subjects” (aka Sheeple) out there say? “Ho-hum! Whatever the masters say, we will obey, without question.”
