Policing Perspective?

There is an on-going “dog fight” in my city. Watching a meeting where the Committee of the Whole discussed leashed dogs in parks, one of the alderman brought to light something I found to be an interesting perspective.  That fact being that the police have far more important things to do than chase dogs and dog-owners in parks who do not comply with city ordinance.

Okay, what does this have to do with a smoking ban? Well, is it really fair to enact these anti-freedom smoking bans when law enforcement here in WI have so many far more serious matters such as illegal immigration, gangs, drugs, theft, rape, sexual assault, property crime, etc.?

Are the night shifts expected to walk into every tavern and “cite people who light”?  (Rhyme intended…couldn’t help myself).  Or are we expected to pay MORE taxes to have officers patrol parks and other public areas just to look for someone with a (gasp!) lit cigarette?

And what about private property matters? Are they expected to get warrants to enter private property just to see if someone is smoking?

The ramifications on this insanity are endless. I would love to hear thoughts direct from law enforcement if possible.

Take the “free” out of freedom and what are you left with? Just “dom”.

  1. Since the smoke would be so dangerous, any police officer walking into a bar where smoking may have taken place only days ago would need to be wearing protective clothing and SCUBA apparatus. Any police officer not so equipped and forced by a supervisor to enter has grounds to sue the department if he develops lung cancer at a later date.

  2. Great points and again, the taxpayer would have to foot the bill for all this protection and any potential subsequent lawsuit from those unfounded evils of 2nd hand smoke… ;)

  3. Bob you forgot that the cleaning crew has to come in wearing HAZMAT gear.
