First Things First

“It is so much more work.  It shouldn’t have to be that way. The state Legislature has definitely let us down. Just think of all the activism and civic spirit that’s being wasted on this issue that could be directed toward homelessness or cleaning up the environment or helping kids get off to a good start in school. It’s a crying shame.”

– Fitchburg Alderman Steve Arnold, on Wisconsin cities passing bans one by one rather than statewide

We agree with Mr. Arnold on one thing:  A lot of energy is be wasted on passing municipality smoking bans. Eradicating homelessness, cleaning up the environment, or helping kids ‘get off to a good start in school’ sound like noble efforts.  Much more noble, in fact, than spending time working for legislation that places a gun to the temples of Wisconsin business owners and tells them that they cannot allow a legal act on their property.

Our civic duty is not to eliminate the free-will of our fellow citizens.  While Steve Arnold is admittedly wasting time fighting for the eradication of choice, true crimes against humanity are taking place in Wisconsin such as rape, murder, and theft.  Do us all a favor, Mr. Arnold; start a campaign to eliminate violent crime in Wisconsin, and then once that’s succeeded, we’ll all be free to bicker over where we should be allowed to dine and work.
