Well, to be honest I continue to anticipate htings getting worse… But this is a step that goes beyond any sense of reason.
‘The End’ for popcorn in cinemas: report
The credits are rolling in Britain for the time-honoured cinematic tradition of munching popcorn at the movies — a newspaper reported Sunday that increasing numbers of cinemas are banning it.
A combination of health-conscious cinemagoers rejecting sugar-coated popcorn and disgust at its distinctive smell is steadily spelling “The End” for the snack in some arthouse cinema chains, the Observer reported.
What?!! How can it be that we’re moving backwards like this? This is not progress. I’ve said it before, as a whole, we are less free than we were decades ago. Liberty is being sapped up by the nannies and the crybabies faster than we can fight it.

Unbelievable.
And now they even considered banning the word “Obese” – so as not to hurt “the children”.
There’s an insanity plague going round…don’t catch it!
Laughably stupid!
And this is coming from someone who often passes up eating popcorn at theaters, unless I’m with someone who ordered popcorn for a movie. It’s sad that Ryan is more than likely right that as a society, we are without a fregging doubt, less free than we were decades ago. This is btw, regardless of the fact that Chicago hasn’t passed a trans-fat ban in restaurants yet, but did stupidly ban smoking on beaches last fall. Hmmm……(and LOL on the former)
Frankly, I don’t see the problem here. This is the owner and operator of a group of cinemas and it seems to me he can make this business decision if he wishes–as can the owners of taverns who choose to prohibit smoking in the establishments they operate.
It is when GOVERNMENT steps in to tell business owners what otherwise legal activities must be banned that should make us angry.
In this case, popcorn fanciers will vote on Mr. Broch’s policy at his box offices.
Tim, you are correct here, although what concerns me greatly is the fact that this is how things start. I agree that business owners have the right to make decisions – after all, this is what we are working on. However – and perhaps this article didn’t do an adequate job of addressing the circumstances behind the move – we all know that all it takes are a few people complaining before the government gets involved. This line “disgust at its distinctive smell” is what I find really worrisome, because we have seen that near-verbatim where smoking bans are concerned.
My apologies Tim, I obviously misinterpreted this post that we both commented on. I was just in a really angry mood, when I learned yesterday without any warning that the city of Kenosha was gonna debate a comprehensive ban, and chose to make a last-minute trip up there to observe the meeting.
So does anyone know if it was a particular chain that chose to stop serving popcorn in British theaters, or just individual movie theater owner(s) there?
