If you thought it would end with smoking…

You’re wrong. Very wrong.

We have seen a surge of interest in controlling drinking and alcohol here in WIsconsin with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinal’s “WASTED in Wisconsin” series… Amongst others.

However, this article was on CNN’s front page tonight. Be afraid, folks. Be very afraid.

Study: Paying more for alcohol saves lives

Higher taxes on alcohol can make a night out more expensive but could save lives, according to a study released Thursday.

Is this the tip of another frightening iceberg? When will people wake up and realize that legislating morals just isn’t the way that government is supposed to be?

  1. Did you notice who funded the study regarding booze taxes and alcohol-related deaths in Alaska? You guessed it. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

  2. This doesn’t surprise me at all. I sometimes wonder if the politicians don’t count on bar closures caused by the smoking ban. Another attempt at social engineering through force of law. Is this what we expect from Government in a free society?

  3. From WI now live in Tennessee. TN passed a state wide ban on smoking in public places unless 21yrs and up. IE; bars. Thankx!!! I am an occasional smoker about a pack a month. I am aware of the health consequences and moderate just as I do my consumption of alcohol. I resent that a private business owner can’t choose what customer base to provide services to. Customers can choose to not patron a business if they do not like a smoking policy. The point is that the “father knows best” government is choosing for you. You are too stupid to make wise choices so they feel they have the authority to do so for you. Scary prospect to loosing individual liberties. Don’t these people have enough to do in their own lives and families? I guess it is a “good deed” to them to make up for there inadequacies in their personal and family lives. Seriously, wouldn’t they be better serving their constituents checking for fraud and waste in government programs? Join the “ban the ban” it is a step in preserving your freedoms>

  5. [...] a quick primer, read this piece about “Wasted in Wisconsin” and this piece about banning [...]

  6. Grief that CNN article is SO transparent! The push is on – the same tactics they used with tobacco and it’s going to have the same results, first that of more taxes to us little folks.

“Given state budgets are in the toilet bowl, it’s an available source of revenue that has not been looked to for a very long time,” Hacker said. “The tax increases are long overdue. The product doesn’t pay its way in covering economic and social costs associated with its use.”

Yes, state budgets are in the toilet bowl and why? Because THEY SPEND TOO MUCH!! Hack at the public school system that grossly wastes our tax dollars. Hack at the politician’s who make far, FAR too much and spend far, FAR lavishly.

I recently emailed every single WI state Senator asking if they were supporting the 17-million dollar PLUS budget increases and if so, would they please tell me why – NOT A ONE HAS RESPONDED.

It’s time the people take their country – and their money – back under their own control.

  7. I’m hoping that the investigation of the Illinois governor will bring out the scandal involved with these bans.
