Senate and Assembly Republicans tried to upset the delicate alliance between the tavern lobby and anti-smoking groups. They spent hours in each house trying to attach dozens of amendments to create exemptions, from hotel rooms to private clubs.
Rep. Leah Vukmir, R-Wauwatosa, branded the ban “anti-smoking zealotry.”
“The only thing that’s compromised are individual rights and individual freedoms,” she said.
Democrats rejected all the amendments, preserving the compromise.
These are the legislators in Wisconsin who do not believe in property rights or the freedom of choice and should be replaced in the next election.

Senators responsible for Federal tax increase
Both are up for election in 2010
It is not the role of government to use taxes as a means of behavior modification. The role of taxes is to get people to pay their fair share of government. Taxing a minority group goes against everything that our country was founded on.
John Adams defined a constitutional republic as “a government of laws, and not of men.”Constitutional republics are a deliberate attempt to diminish the perceived threat of majoritarianism, thereby protecting dissenting individuals and minority groups from the “tyranny of the majority” by placing checks on the power of the majority of the population

Our Constitution says that all citizens of the USA are to be treated fairly and equal in all situations involving our Governmement and the citizens of the USA. The cigarette smokers of the USA have been treted like we dont have any rights at all. We have been over taxed without any representation and have been baned from places that were paid for with our tax dollars. This is a case of discrimination against the group called smokers. Our right to live a free and happy life has been violated because our pursuit for personal happiness has been taken away from the smokers of this country. We have not broken any laws and we have not killed anyone by smoking cigarettes. I have never seen any cases that say that second hand smoke was the cause of death nor will there ever be a case like this because it cannot be proved because of the 1,000 or more toxins in the air we breathe every day. All of the smoking bans and taxes should be recended because of faulse representation for them. Smokers have the same ammount of civil rights just like anyone else does and should not be treated like second class citizens by our Government.
As a long time member of the Racine city tavern league it was rare that the T.L.W. asked the members to vote for one party or another. Lets not start now. Haveing been involved in politics ,both as running campaigns and looking for candidates I think it silly we do this now.Lets do the best we can to work with the Dems. as they are in power in all offices at the state level. I also would like to commend the T.l.W. and the officers who negotiated with the Dems. durring the budget process. Time will tell if we did the right thing, and i’m betting we did. As a non-smoker I will be happy to see the removal of ashtrays from my bar.I do not like to be told I must outlaw smoking, but as I get older I’m getting used to it. I strongly suggest we all try to work with our legislaters and see what the future shows us. In the mean time, I plan on designing a place outside that smokers can use. This seems a better use of my time.
Lenny Hand,
Sorry I have no intent to work with them. You failed to mention that you are third chair of the democratic party in your district. They don’t care about the constitution, property rights or individual rights. The $1.75 tax increase over the the last couple of years are insult enough without them telling adult business owners that the not only can’t use a legal product on their own property, but can’t allow their guest to do the same. As an American you should be insulted and pissed off at the Nanny State taking over and the erosion of rights. Look around you, the next fascist dictator will be wearing a stethoscope. Wake up and smell the coffee while you still can! I also would like to add that we are not the Tavern League that I don’t recall anyone from ban the ban endorsing one party or the other. If you look at the list, there were traitors to the constitution from both parties.

We cannot be effective as a voting block if we keep voting along party lines. It is true that not all voting yes are Democrats, but the majority are, in this state and nationwide. The Democratic Party is NOT the same party as it was when JFK was in office and we must acknowledge that fact. We MUST make sure that they know that we will not vote for them by emailing them or writing to them.
Lack of regard for tax-payers and their money starts at the top.
http://thechadhasspoken.blogspot.com/2009/07/doyles-travel-reports-deficient.html
Doyle spending excessively? Not turning in receipts? I’m shocked…SHOCKED!! A few snippets from this article…
Nearly three-fourths of the time in 2007 and 2008, Doyle and his staff didn’t supply receipts as required under state travel policy. By comparison, Lt. Gov. Barbara Lawton and her staff didn’t provide receipts one-third of the time during the same period.
Among expenses that weren’t properly documented was a business-class ticket to Ireland for Doyle in April 2008 that cost $5,226 round trip. An accompanying coach-class ticket for Goodwin cost $830.
The travel policy requires state employees to purchase the lowest appropriate airfare, which is described as coach fare. More expensive charges require written justification, but that wasn’t provided for Doyle’s trip to Ireland.
Goodwin and Chandra Miller Fienen, Doyle’s chief legal counsel, said the more expensive ticket was warranted because Doyle needed to be well-rested. “We can’t afford to have the governor sick,” Miller Fienen said.
Are you kidding me?? We can’t afford to have the governor sick?? Sorry folks, but what we CAN’T AFFORD is to spend an extra $4,396 to make sure that this jackass is “well rested.” Is this the best justification they can come up with?? The arrogance of this man is astounding. From the chauffered vehicles in Canada to the $600+ hotel rooms in London, it sure seems to me that this governor moves around quite a bit, contrary to his chief of staff’s assertions.
I simply cannot understand how this pompous ass can face himself in the mirror while people all over Wisconsin are losing their jobs and businesses are fleeing the state at an alarming rate. We deserve better…MUCH better. 2010 can’t get here soon enough.
Gary,
You should check this out.

Too ban Gov. Quinn(who IMO, is just as bad as Doyle, if not worse) can’t be recalled, due to Illinois lawmakers that (not surprisingly) stopped a recall bill from becoming law!
